For reasons we don’t understand, the jet lag coming back from China affected us all much more severely than it did on the way over there. This is particularly strange since the time difference is about half a day, so it seems like the direction of the flight shouldn’t matter. The only difference would be the date.
Dawn comes late in Edmonton at this time of year, and nighttime there is never extremely dark, particularly now with snow on the ground. So the light coming in the window when I awoke in the morning didn’t seem inconsistent with it being the normal time to get up. But a peek at my watch told me it was only 3:15 AM, and a peek out the bedroom door revealed Dan and Sarah also prematurely awake, and already having breakfast!
We’re now back in Maryland, a day later than expected due to equipment problems on the plane that was to fly us from Edmonton to Minneapolis. We each got 2,000 Frequent Flier miles as recompense for the delay (or up to $10 in food or a free drink on a future flight—an easy choice it was! Love them miles!) Our schedule is getting closer to normal but not quite there yet. We still feel a bit spacy.
This was not sufficient grounds for us to miss the annual Veterans Day cruise for veterans in Baltimore Harbor on a restored WW II Liberty Ship. You’ve never really heard the Star Spangled Banner till you’ve heard it from the deck of a troopship, proudly sailing past Fort McHenry and its huge 15-star 15-stripe, star spangled banner. But that’s a story for another blog.

However, please don’t go away. Over the next week or so we will be reliving our trip and capturing some of the enduring memories in a page called Impressions. You will find a link to it in the sidebar at the top of the blog. We also hope to organize our pictures and perhaps a few more videos and make them available from one of the photo sites on the Web. So stay tuned, faithful readers. Thanks for sharing our adventure with us.
